Everything you need to know about jellyfish stings

There are only sandy beaches in Tunisia and the further south a resort is, the softer the sand becomes. Another advantage of Tunisian beaches is a very smooth and comfortable entrance to the sea. On the one hand, there is enough space near the shore with shallow depths where children can safely frolic. On the other hand, you don’t have to go far away from the shore to find enough depth to enjoy swimming.

From mid-July to mid-August, you can stumble upon a jellyfish in the water. The places of accumulation of jellyfish depend on the direction of underwater currents, but in Tunisia there are traditionally very few of them in Nabeul and Hammamet, more in Sousse, Monastir, and Mahdia.

The danger of consequences associated with jellyfish stings is greatly exaggerated. It can be compared with a nettle sting. If you immediately actively rub the bite site with wet sand, you will be able to avoid redness. An alternative way is to rinse the bite site abundantly with running water, then rub the skin with half a tomato. Tomato juice neutralizes the bite and reduces painful sensations.

However, the best way to protect yourself from a jellyfish sting is prevention. During the period of jellyfish appearance, ask for the cream Médusyl in the pharmacies of the country. Buying Médusyl will even help you to save money, since the cream has a double effect:

– it protects against jellyfish stings (active for 80 minutes after application);

– it protects against sunburn (available in 2 versions — SPF15, SPF30).

Let’s not dissemble, even Médusyl won’t protect you from a jellyfish bite 100%. But pain and redness with Médusyl will be much less than without it.

First of all, prevention is relevant for young children, who usually have a low pain threshold and even with minimal exposure begin to experience pain.
